Super Region 2 – Southeast (44 teams)
Central and Southern West Virginia/Eastern Tennessee/Western Carolina (10 teams)
Carson-Newman, Charleston, Concord, Glenville State, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, Tusculum, Virginia-Wise, West Virginia State, West Virginia Wesleyan
I basically took the five remaining West Virginia teams from the Mountain East – plus Virginia-Wise – and added the two Tennessee members of the South Atlantic Conference – Carson-Newman and Tusculum – plus the two western-most North Carolina schools from the SAC – Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill and effectively shifted the MEC’s footprint south. It makes for a relatively compact league, all things considered.
I-85/95 Corridor, North Carolina/Virginia (12 teams)
Catawba, Chowan, Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone, St. Augustine’s, Shaw, Virginia State, Virginia Union, Wingate, Winston-Salem State
The geography for this league worked out in that I took the ten remaining North Carolina and Virginia members of the CIAA, plus added two ‘natural’ North Carolina SAC schools to the mix – Catawba (located in Salisbury, N.C. – the same city as Livingstone) and Wingate (just down the road from Johnson C. Smith in the Charlotte area) to form a league which covers the Interstates 85 and 95 corridors.
South Carolina/Metro Atlanta (10 teams)
Benedict, Brevard (Transitioning to D3 in 2017), Clark Atlanta, Limestone, Morehouse, Newberry, North Carolina-Pembroke, North Greenville, Shorter, West Georgia
I put the four South Carolina schools in the same league with the two southern-most North Carolina schools and the four northern Georgia/Metro Atlanta schools. And believe me when I say this, but splitting the seven Georgia schools into different leagues wasn’t the easiest thing in the world, but with the cluster of Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, Shorter and West Georgia made things a little easier.
Alabama/Florida/Mississippi/South Georgia (12 teams)
Albany State, Delta State, Florida Tech, Fort Valley State, Lane, Miles, Mississippi College, North Alabama, Tuskegee, Valdosta State, West Alabama, West Florida
Florida Tech’s location in Central Florida made putting the Southeast Region conferences a little tricky. However, putting the three southwestern Georgia schools with the Alabama and Mississippi schools from the GSC and SIAC, along with West Florida made this a little easier. Another tricky issue was Lane being the only D2 football program in Western Tennessee; I had originally thought about putting them in a Midwest-centered league with schools from Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. But, Lane’s relative proximity to North Alabama helped make this work.
