Answer
Iowa
Iowa fired fifth-year head coach Bob Commings after the 1978 season and hired North Texas (then North Texas State) head coach Hayden Fry. The Texas native — who spent his entire life and career in The Lone Star State until moving to Iowa City — coached the Hawkeyes for 20 seasons before retiring after the 1998 season. He was replaced by former assistant and then-Baltimore Ravens offensive line coach Kirk Ferentz.
