The Women’s National Basketball Players Association and players of the WNBA announced today the partnership with Rock the Vote, NBA players, coaches, national media on a new initiative called Hoopers Vote. The announcement comes in the middle of National Voter Registration Week.
Hoopers Vote aims at using the platforms around the game of basketball to help influence communities to register to vote, educate on the process and get everyone’s voices heard for the 2020 election. By using their platforms, Hoopers Vote will work to empower young voters and help push for further engagement in the process
The partnership is set to provide custom election centers for teams, players, fans and local communities. These centers provide resources and support to register to vote, check on registration status, view guidelines and provide volunteer opportunities.
“From the words “Black Lives Matter” on the parquet floor to players wearing “Vote” shirts courtside, the basketball community understands the gravity of this moment,” said Carolyn DeWitt, Rock the Vote President per release. “Hoopers Vote will harness the energy we’ve seen across the basketball family over the last several months into moving young people to take tangible actions like registering to vote, researching and casting their ballots.”
Hoopers Vote women’s basketball ambassadors include Hall of Fame Lisa Leslie, Chelsea Gray (Los Angeles Sparks), Renee Montgomery (Atlanta Dream), Carolyn Swords (Las Vegas Aces) and the entire WNBPA. Jaren Jackson Jr, Langston Galloway and Duncan Robinson represent the NBA. Other ambassadors include Alex English, James Worthy, Steve Smith, Quentin Richardson, Channing Frye, Jason and Jarron Collins.
Earlier this summer, Los Angeles Sparks guard Chelsea Gray announced her partnership with Rock the Vote and their Athletes Rock the Vote Program. Hoopers Vote expands on this initiative as we inch closer and closer to election time.
