The New Mexico men’s basketball team is heading to the 2025 NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid. In the Mountain West tourney, it defeated San Jose State 63-52 before losing 72-69 to Boise State in the semifinals.
The Lobos are 27-7 overall this season and went 17-3 in the MWC standings.
New Mexico NCAA Tournament Appearances
In 2025, New Mexico basketball will make its 17th appearance in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament.
The Lobos also reached the tourney in 1968, 1974, 1978, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2024.

New Mexico Basketball NCAA Tournament Wins
New Mexico has won nine games in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament. The Lobos defeated Idaho State and Dayton in 1974, Kansas State in 1996, Old Dominion in 1997, Butler in 1998, Missouri in 1999, Montana in 2010, Long Beach State in 2012, and Marquette in 2025.
Their overall record in the Big Dance is 9-18.
New Mexico Basketball Coach Richard Pitino Salary
Richard Pitino has an annual base salary of $1.2 million as New Mexico’s head basketball coach.
He is in his fourth season leading New Mexico. The Lobos have hit at least 20 wins in the last three years, going 22-12 in 2022-23, 26-10 last year, and 26-7 this season.
Pitino was previously the head coach at Minnesota from 2013 to 2021. And he was FIU’s head coach in the 2012-13 season. He spent time as an assistant at Northeastern, Duquesne, Louisville, and Florida, and Pitino also served as Louisville’s associate head coach in 2011-12.
