Minnesota received seven total points in the preseason AP top 25 last year. Eleven weeks later, the Gophers were 9-0 and ranked eighth in the College Football Playoff Rankings.
While Minnesota earned that ranking thanks to a win over Penn State four days earlier, they were largely 9-0 and in the playoff discussion thanks to a favorable schedule. Kentucky and Washington State made similar jumps in 2018, rising from under the radar into the real playoff discussion come early November. Who could be a deep dark horse for the College Football Playoff this year?
