San Diego State is all alone in first place in the Mountain West following the Aztecs’ win over New Mexico last weekend and Utah State’s loss to Grand Canyon.
The Antelopes (11-6, 4-2 MWC), who are in their first year in the league, have a chance to knock off another top team when they host San Diego State (13-4, 7-0) on Wednesday.
San Diego State will be without 7-foot sophomore Magoon Gwath, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. A hip injury has slowed him down the past two games, and last season’s Mountain West Freshman of the Year is averaging just 4.3 rebounds a game.
The Aztecs were picked to win the regular-season title in their final season in the conference, and they’re well on their way after winning seven straight games, including a 110-107 triple-overtime victory over Boise State. The last time they lost was a 68-45 setback at No. 1 Arizona on Dec. 20, 2025.

San Diego State’s defense has been dominant. The Aztecs have held three of their past four opponents under 70 points, and they’re giving up an average of 72.2 points a night.
Junior guard Miles Byrd led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds against New Mexico. It was the second-most points he has scored in a game this season, trailing only his 24 points in a 108-107 double-overtime loss to Troy. Fellow guard Reese Dixon-Waters also just missed out on a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Grand Canyon snapped Utah State’s eight-game winning streak with an 84-74 victory over the weekend.
Well-traveled graduate student Brian Moore Jr. led the way with a season-high 20 points. He began his career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M before he spent two seasons at Murray State and last season at Norfolk State, where he led the Spartans to the NCAA Tournament and won the Lou Henson Award, which is given to the nation’s top mid-major player. Makaih Williams added 20 points off the bench, and 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward Nana Owusu-Anane chipped in with his fourth double-double of the season after finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

San Diego State at Grand Canyon Prediction
I predict Grand Canyon wins, 78-72.
The Antelopes have already cemented their place as one of the best teams in the Mountain West in their first year in the conference. They’re sitting in fifth place, but wins over Utah State and San Diego State will almost surely make them one of the favorites to win the league.
Grand Canyon has talented, experienced scorers in Moore and UNLV transfer Jaden Henley, and it’s home to one of the conference’s top big men in Owusu-Anane. He should have a big night with Gwath out.
The Lopes aren’t lighting the world on fire offensively. They average 75.4 points per game, which ranks near the bottom of the conference, but the defense is allowing just 68.9 PPG, which ranks No. 3 in the league.
Grand Canyon is hard to beat at Global Credit Union Arena. The Antelopes are 8-2 at home this season. They’ve won 40 of their past 43 home games, and they’re 79-12 at home in six seasons under head coach Bryce Drew.
