Los Angeles Sparks point guard Chelsea Gray announced on Friday that she is partnering with Equality California and Rock the Vote to launch the Chelsea Gray Assist For Equality program as official ambassador.
Equality California is the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. For every assist Gray records this 2020 WNBA season, Gray will donate $50 to both organizations to split the proceeds. The Los Angeles Sparks have announced that they will match her contribution.
“The more I have learned about our voting system, especially at the state level, the more I want to help educate others on it as well,” Chelsea Gray said per release. “Voting is a huge part of our democracy and is pivotal for the future of our country. Sitting out this year is not an option. I challenge others to continue educating themselves and join me in donating any dollar amount they can per assist I dish out this season to Equality California and Rock The Vote.”
Part of Gray’s mission involves working closely with Equality California on LGBTQ+ voter engagement for this 2020 election. Fans will be able to engage through their official website on events, discussions, digital campaigns and also follow Gray’s contribution throughout the season. She will also work alongside Rock The Vote’s Hoopers Vote initiative to get more people registered to vote.
“With so much at stake for the LGBTQ+ community this November, Chelsea Gray knows the importance of making each of our voices heard — on the court and at the ballot box,” said Rick Chavez Zbur, Equality California Executive Director per release. “We are so inspired by Chelsea’s commitment to the fight for full, lived LGBTQ+ equality, and we’re excited to team up with her and the LA Sparks this year.”
