Lipscomb punched their tourney ticket with a win over Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Sunday evening. They led the Eagles by 32 points in the second half before holding on for a thrilling victory.
The Bisons — yes, Bisons plural (and here's why) — have been a Division-I member for since 2000. They represent Lipscomb University, a small private institution in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville, above five miles southwest of downtown.
It is a Christian school with an enrollment of just 2,987 undergraduate students (1,655 graduate) that was founded in 1891. David Lipscomb and James A. Harding — both leaders in the Churches of Christ, an organization with more than 40,000 congregations worldwide today — founded it as Nashville Bible School. It was later changed to David Lipscomb College, then David Lipscomb University and, in 2005, Lipscomb University.
And it's pronounced "Lip-scum," not "Lip-scomb."
