Nearly every active FBS program has competed in multiple conferences, including East Carolina. The Pirates — then known as the Teachers — began playing football in 1932 but didn't join a conference until 15 years later, their first of their four all-time conference affiliations.
ECU joined their fourth one, the American Athletic Conference, in 2014. Where did the Pirates arrive from? And what other conferences has ECU been a member of?

Answer
North State Conference (1932-46)
Southern Conference (1965-76)
Conference USA (1997-2013)
All three conferences still exist, two of which — Southern Conference and Conference USA — have the same name.
The North State Conference was formed in 1930 and changed to Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1961, Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference in 1995 and Conference Carolinas in 2007.
