In fairly stunning news, Southern Utah head coach Ed Lamb recently announced he will leave the school to join the new coaching staff at BYU. The surprising announcement comes just a month after the Thunderbirds claimed the 2015 Big Sky Conference crown and an automatic playoff birth.
The 41-year old Lamb brings 18 years of coaching experience to Kalani Sitake's staff after the former Oregon State assistant head coach and defensive coordinator was hired to lead the Cougars.
Speaking to the media for the first time as a BYU assistant, Lamb said, "It's definitely a dream come true. You hear those words all the time, but it is. I dreamed about an opportunity to come back here. This place and these people were so instrumental in my life and continue to be. To have the opportunity to come back now, the opportunity to pass that along to the players who are here now, it's very special to me personally."
Lamb and the new staff have large shoes to fill. Before leaving for Virginia in December, former BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall led the cougars to 11 straight bowl appearances en route to a 99-43 record.
Lamb hopes his success with the Thunderbirds translates to the FBS level. He led his school to its first ever FCS playoff appearance in 2013, crushed FBS foes UNLV 41-16 in 2001, and almost defeated in-state rival Utah State in the 2015 season opener before finishing 8-4. After securing an automatic playoff birth, Southern Utah nearly upended Sam Houston State on the road before falling 42-39.
The new BYU assistant finished his career at SUU with a 45-47 record (27-21 in conference play) and was named the 2015 American Football Coaches Association Region 5 Coach of the Year.
