Jim Mora Jr. has got the momentum going as he enters his fourth season as the head coach of UConn. Last year, UConn went 9-4 and capped the season with a 27-14 victory over North Carolina in the Fenway Bowl.
Mora has guided the Huskies to bowl games in two of his three seasons with the team, not the easiest feat when competing as an independent. In addition, last year was UConn’s first winning season since 2010 when the Huskies went 8-5 and earned a berth to the Fiesta Bowl.
In late December, Mora signed a two-year contract extension and is now locked up through Dec. 31, 2028. He was previously a head coach for the Atlanta Falcons, the Seattle Seahawks, and UCLA.
Now the question is whether UConn can duplicate last year’s success. With a strong group of offensive skill position players returning and some key transfers, the Huskies have the potential to keep the winning momentum going.

Key UConn Football Returners
QB Joe Fagnano – Offensive MVP of the Fenway Bowl
UConn Season Preview
Last year UConn averaged 31.9 points and many key figures return.
UConn’s Offense Should Be Soaring
Graduate quarterback Joe Fagnano, entering his third season at UConn after beginning his career at Maine, had a fine statistical year in 2024. He completed 58% of his passes for 1,631 yards, 20 touchdowns, and four interceptions in 10 games. He was especially sharp in the bowl win over North Carolina, completing 16 of 23 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Fagnano was named the Fenway Bowl Offensive MVP.
Redshirt junior Nick Evers will battle for the quarterback spot. Evers, who began his career first at Oklahoma and then went to Wisconsin, saw substantial time during his first season a year ago at UConn. Evers completed 97 of 180 passes for 918 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions in nine games. He also rushed for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
UConn’s Top Playmakers
The ground game will be led by Cam Edwards, who rushed for a team-high 830 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 13 passes for 148 yards and two TDs.
Skyler Bell, in his first season after transferring from Wisconsin, recorded 50 receptions for 860 yards and five touchdowns last year for the Huskies.
UConn’s Offensive Line
The offensive line should be strong, but replacing Chase Lundt, a HERO Sports First-Team G5 All-American and a sixth-round selection of the Buffalo Bills, will be difficult. Wes Hoeh returns as the starting center to anchor the line.
The addition of 6-foot-5, 320-pound junior guard Ty Chan, a transfer from Notre Dame who appeared in 12 games last year primarily on special teams, should boost the offensive line.
UConn’s Defense Not As Experienced
The defense doesn’t have nearly as many returning impact players as the offense. Redshirt sophomore cornerback Cam Chadwick, who made 12 starts and recorded 47 tackles and two interceptions last year, leads the secondary.
D’Mon Brinson who played both nickel and safety, is another veteran returner. He appeared in all 13 games and recorded 48 tackles and one interception.
Last season, linebacker/EDGE Donovan Branch was a key reserve, making 24 tackles including 3.5 tackles for loss. He should have a much bigger role this season.
Also helping the linebacking corps should be Temple transfer Tyquan King, who had 111 tackles last season for the Owls and was second in the American Athletic Conference with 9.3 tackles per game.
The Huskies loaded up on the defensive line in the transfer portal. Among the additions is Trent Jones II, who appeared in 24 games during his four seasons at Iowa State.
UConn Football Season Prediction
I predict that UConn will go Over 7.5 wins and win eight games.
The key is how the Huskies do against Power Four schools. This year, there are three P4 teams on the schedule with games at Syracuse and Boston College and at home against Duke.
Last year, UConn was 1-3 vs. P4 schools, but after an opening 50-7 loss at Maryland, the Huskies were more than competitive in the other contests. Besides the aforementioned bowl win over North Carolina, UConn lost 31-24 at Syracuse and 23-20 at home against Wake Forest.
If UConn wins two of these three games, that should bode really well for earning at least eight victories. The offense should be potent, and if the defense comes around, UConn should have another winning season.
