There hasn’t been a time throughout Nick Minicucci’s career at the University of Delaware where the quarterback’s number was called and he wasn’t prepared.
As a true freshman in 2023, Minicucci occasionally saw action throughout the year but injuries in the QB room led to him making his first career start in the first round of the FCS Playoffs. He guided the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a come-from-behind 36-34 victory over Lafayette where they trailed by as many as 21 points.
After briefly battling his own shoulder issues early last year, injuries put Minicucci into the starting spot once again. He started five games during the 2024 campaign and finished with 824 passing yards and 13 total touchdowns.

This season, Minicucci wasn’t named the starter ahead of UD’s season-opener against Delaware State. Zach Marker took the first snap of the season for the Blue Hens, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury on their second possession of the game. Marker battled injuries throughout his time at UD.
It became the third consecutive season an injury thrust Minicucci into the QB1 spot. The situation created another opportunity for him to take advantage of, which has become a norm for the Midland Park, New Jersey, product.
Minicucci’s play this season earned him second-team All-Conference USA honors and helped the Blue Hens earn a bowl berth in their first season in the FBS. They will face Louisiana in the 68 Ventures Bowl at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday in Mobile, Alabama.
He’s been one of the top passers in the country all season long, and his 292.3 passing YPG leads Conference USA and is the fourth-best mark in the country. He’s tossed 22 touchdowns to seven interceptions, has added 231 yards and 10 scores on the ground, and is the only Division I player (FBS or FCS) with at least 3,500 passing yards and 10 rushing TDs.
Even though he solidified himself as the starter early on, Minicucci has remained prepared. It’s been the foundation of what’s guided this year’s success.
“It’s definitely easier to get comfortable knowing you’re going to be the guy that week, week in and week out,” Minicucci told the media last month. “Before I … was trying to be a different guy on the field, and now I finally get to play like myself and be myself out there and it’s all because I do the things that are supposed to be done each week — watch all the film, meet with receivers, talk to Coach a ton.
“I’ve only gotten better, I feel, and that’s because of the details and the way I prep each week.”
That recipe has helped Minicucci etch his name into the Delaware record books. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior has the opportunity to break a few program records held by Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco, while he ranks behind the 2008 first round NFL Draft pick in many other categories.
In today’s era of college football, there are a lot of quarterbacks who would choose to transfer and test the waters instead of being a backup for consecutive seasons. Minicucci stayed loyal and committed, however, and is now reaping the rewards and leading the Blue Hens to wins.
He’s a proven competitor, has gotten better as the season has progressed, and has provided UD with the consistency under center they’ve been missing the past few years.
Now with what should be a full offseason of Minicucci cemented as the Blue Hens’ starter, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him take his play up another level next year.
I think he’ll cap 2025 with a big performance against Louisiana, and it’ll propel him going into the offseason and into a strong 2026 campaign.
68 Ventures Bowl Prediction
I predict Delaware rallies behind Minicucci and wins its first bowl as an FBS member. College football betting odds have the Blue Hens as a three-point underdog.
I think Minicucci can find success against Louisiana’s defense, which is allowing a 66.8% completion percentage.
If the Hens can make ULL QB Lunch Winfield be one-dimensional, then I think it’ll be tough for the Ragin’ Cajuns to keep pace with Delaware.
