Wake Forest nearly lost the last time it played a Conference USA opponent. Could it happen this time around?
The Deacons beat Kennesaw State 10-9 to open the season. And they’re now 7-3 overall going into their game against Delaware this week.
The Blue Hens are ineligible for postseason play due to rules for teams moving up from the FCS to the FBS. Still, in their first season in CUSA, they’re 5-5 and 3-4 against league opponents.
The Blue Hens started the year 3-1 with wins over Delaware State, UConn, and FIU with a loss to Colorado. Then they lost back-to-back games against Western Kentucky and Jacksonville State by a collective 15 points.
They’ve gone 2-2 in their past four contests with wins over Middle Tennessee and Louisiana Tech while losing to LIberty and Sam Houston.

Delaware vs. Wake Forest Prediction
I predict Wake Forest will win but Delaware will cover the spread at +17.5. I also project the game will go Over 50.5 total points.
I realize that Wake Forest is an ACC school that has been competing at a high level in recent weeks. The Deacons have won four of their last five games. But most of those wins have not been very convincing. They beat Virginia Tech, SMU, and Virginia each by one possession and lost to Florida State 42-7 during that stretch.
And I could see Wake Forest looking past the Blue Hens. But it shouldn’t.
The Blue Hens are third in the CUSA in scoring offense with 28.2 points per game and second in total offense with 419 yards per game. They’re in the bottom half of the league in terms of scoring defense and total defense, though, so they may need to rely on their offense if they’re going to keep this game close.
Nick Minicucci has thrown for 3,063 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions on a 62% completion rate while rushing for 197 yards and nine TDs. Wide receivers Sean Wilson (48 catches for 687 yards and two TDs) and Kyre Duplessis (50 receptions for 666 yards and five TDs) lead Delaware’s offense through the air.
I think the Blue Hens could put up a good amount of points in this game and surprise some people.
