Georgia State Head Coach Dell McGee’s Background
McGee was one of the most respected positional coaches in the country before heading to Georgia State.
He coached running backs at Georgia for eight years. He was also the team’s assistant head coach in 2018 and a run game coordinator from 2019 to 2023.
Four different Bulldogs rushed for more than 1,000 yards in one season during that time – Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, D’Andre Swift, and Elijah Holyfield – who all went on to become pro players. Five former Georgia running backs who McGee worked with – Chubb, Michel, Swift, James Cook, and Zamir White – were selected in the first four rounds of the NFL Draft.
McGee is familiar with the Sun Belt, as he worked at Georgia Southern as a running backs coach from 2014-15 and interim head coach for the team’s 2015 bowl game win.
He was an analyst at Auburn, his alma mater, in 2013. He played as a defensive back there from 1992-95 before playing for the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, and other pro teams in the Arena Football League, XFL, and NFL Europe.
He coached at the high school level from 2002-12.
