Northern Illinois started out the season on a high note with a 2-0 record including a win over Notre Dame. That led to the Huskies being ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.
But the Huskies have lost four of their last six games since then and are 1-3 in MAC play.
Western Michigan, meanwhile, has been on a different trajectory. The Broncos started the year at 1-3 overall, but they’re currently on a four-game winning streak, all games against conference opponents.
Now NIU and WMU will face off this evening.

Northern Illinois vs. Western Michigan Prediction
I predict Western Michigan will win and cover the spread at +1.5. I also project the game will go Over 51.5 total points.
Even when WMU was losing early on in the season, I was impressed with the team’s performance in the trenches against teams like Wisconsin. I thought the Broncos might have a shot to be in the mix for the MAC Championship, and now that is true.
But what’s been most impressive during this midseason turnaround is the Broncos’ offensive performances. Against conference teams, WMU is averaging 44.8 points per game.
NIU is a tough team, even despite its record. The Huskies haven’t lost a game by more than a single possession all season. And they’ve been in all these games by keeping them low scoring. They’ve allowed an average of just 16.3 points per contest during their last four outings.
But I don’t think WMU will allow this game to be that low-scoring. I’m anticipating the Broncos will find ways to put up some points in this contest and will remain undefeated in conference play.
