Mike Bloomgren had led Rice to back-to-back bowl game appearances over two years. But that wasn’t enough for him to stick around as the team’s head coach, as Rice fired Bloomgren during his seventh season with the program.
The Owls then hired Davidson head coach Scott Abell to lead the team in hopes of contending for conference titles in the near future. Rice did make it to a bowl game after going 5-7 during the regular season, losing to Texas State in the Armed Forces Bowl.
