Finally, I had a winning week last week! I’m now 26-36-1 on the season with my weekly Group of Five best bets after going 3-2 last week.
Make no mistake, that’s still terrible, but we’re hoping to finish out the year with a flourish. Maybe bowl season will be our friend.
I looked through college football betting odds to find a few plays I like, so here are five best bets for this week’s action. Hopefully we win at least three.

UTSA +3 at Tulane
This is arguably the game of the week in the Group of Five this weekend, and I’m taking UTSA to cover. I think the Roadrunners have a good shot of pulling the upset behind star quarterback Frank Harris, who is rounding into form.
UTSA is 7-0 in conference play with all but one win – an eight-point road victory at North Texas – coming by double digits. The Roadrunners aren’t just winning, they’re mauling teams. As for Tulane, four of the team’s seven conference wins are by one score. Both teams are undefeated, but UTSA has looked more impressive over the last month.
Rice -4 vs. FAU
A win for Rice gives the Owls bowl eligibility. The other Owls, FAU, are 4-7 and won’t be going bowling this fall. I’m not sure FAU will show up and play with the motivation necessary to pick up a road win over a respectable Rice squad. I like the motivational factor here as an angle when betting.
Jacksonville State +1.5 at New Mexico State
New Mexico State! How about Jerry Kill’s bunch? The Aggies defeated Auburn by 21(!) points last weekend, a huge win for the team and CUSA. Now, they return home off the emotional high having already clinched a spot in the CUSA title game.
I think there’s going to be an emotional hangover for the Aggies against a solid Jacksonville State squad. I expect the Gamecocks to perform admirably Saturday, pulling an upset in their regular-season finale.

Central Michigan +10 vs. Toledo
The Rockets are no joke, and they’re sneakily hanging around in the New Year’s Six picture. If chaos takes place in the AAC, it wouldn’t be outlandish to see Toledo floated as a possible New Year’s Six Bowl participant.
Even with Toledo’s success, I’ll gladly take a respectable Central Michigan team to cover a 10-point spread. Central Michigan is undefeated at home this season, and the Chippewas are fighting for bowl eligibility.
ODU -3 vs. Georgia State
Georgia State is 0-4 in its last four games, losing by a combined 184-69. Yikes! If Old Dominion wins Saturday, the Monarchs become eligible. There’s clear motivation for the Monarchs, who have surpassed expectations this season. As for Georgia State, it’s hard to see the team turning around its recent skid with little left to play for this season.
