Welcome to the 2021 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Leading up to Week 0 games on Aug. 28, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-0. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2020 fall-2021 spring season.
The 99-0 countdown central page can be found here.
Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2020 fall-2021 spring rosters.
40: Isaiah Chambers, DL (Sr.) — McNeese
Chambers was a four-star high school recruit out of Houston, Texas. Ranked the No. 2 strong-side defensive end in Texas and No. 7 nationally by 247Sports, he signed with TCU and redshirted in 2016. Chambers decided to transfer to Houston and sat out in 2017 due to transfer rules.
In 2018, Chambers had 4.5 sacks. And in 2019, he led Houston with five sacks and also had six tackles for loss. He then entered the portal as a grad transfer and landed at McNeese, where he made his debut in the spring of 2021.
Chambers immediately became one of the top defensive players in the FCS. The 6-foot-5, 251-pounder was a consensus First Team All-American and finished fourth in voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best FCS defensive player.
The Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year wreaked havoc with 32 tackles, 14 TFLs, 7.5 sacks, and 11 quarterback hurries in seven games.
Chambers is a player NFL scouts are especially keeping an eye on this fall. The Sept. 11 game at LSU is a chance for him to show he can be productive against the top level in college football too.
