Welcome to the 2021 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Leading up to Week 0 games on Aug. 28, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-0. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2020 fall-2021 spring season.
The 99-0 countdown central page can be found here.
Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2020 fall-2021 spring rosters.
59: ZeVeyon Furcron, OL (Sr.) — Southern Illinois
After starting eight games at defensive tackle as a redshirt freshman in 2017, Furcron transitioned to the offensive line and won the starting left guard job in 2018. He has started every game at that position since (33 straight) as he’s become a top big man in the MVFC.
Furcron is a punishing blocker at 6-foot-2 and 327 pounds. He opened holes for two 1,000-yard rushers (D.J. Davis and Javon Williams Jr.) in 2019 and was named to the All-Conference Second Team.
SIU then had a breakthrough season in the spring, knocking off Weber State (one of the top programs in the FCS) in the first round. The Salukis then held a 20-7 lead right before halftime against eventual national runner-ups South Dakota State in the quarterfinals before the Jacks battled back and won 31-26.
Furcron was again outstanding as SIU led the conference in total offense. He played 644 snaps and graded out at 90 percent with only one sack allowed. Furcron earned All-MVFC First Team honors for his play.
SIU looks loaded, especially offensively, for another playoff run and ranks No. 5 in HERO Sports’ Preseason Top 25.
