49: Brock Mogensen, LB (Jr.) — South Dakota
A two-star recruit by 247Sports, Mogensen has been an impact player for USD’s improving defense since his 2019 redshirt freshman season.
The Coyotes allowed 34.2 points per game in 2018, 32.4 PPG in 2019, 24.0 PPG in the 2021 spring, and 20.7 PPG last fall, ranking No. 23 in FCS scoring defense and No. 24 in rushing defense (120.9 yards per game).
Mogensen had a promising start to his career in 2019, finishing fifth on the team with 56 tackles despite missing two games due to injury. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder developed into a standout linebacker and a top LB duo alongside Jack Cochrane in the spring. He recorded 38 tackles, three TFLs, and one interception in just four games, finishing second in the MVFC in tackles per game. Mogensen earned All-Conference Second Team honors.
Mogensen was productive again last season, showing off his nose for the football and totaling 86 tackles, six TFLs, three QB hurries, and one sack in 12 games. He recorded seven tackles and 1.5 TFLs to start the season at Kansas and had a season-high 11 tackles in a first-round playoff loss against Southern Illinois. USD eyes a return to the postseason in 2022, ranking No. 21 in our preseason Top 25.
Cochrane signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Chiefs this year. Mogensen, with his build and skill set on the field, has the potential to sign an NFL contract next year as well. NFL Draft Diamonds ranks him the No. 68 small-school prospect for 2023.
