Welcome to the 2022 FCS Jersey Countdown. Leading up to the start of weekly college football odds and Week 0 games on Aug. 27, HERO Sports will name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-0. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on last season’s rosters.
The 99-0 countdown central page can be found here.
Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2021 rosters.
62: Colin Gamroth, OL (Sr.) — Villanova
Gamroth arrived at Villanova as a walk-on. But after two years of development, he turned himself into one of the top offensive lineman in the CAA.
The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder is a three-year starter and a three-time All-CAA selection. Gamroth was on the 2019 All-Conference Third Team (center), 2021 spring Second Team (left guard), and 2021 fall Second Team (center).
Nova prides itself on a physical brand of football, and it starts up front with Gamroth anchoring the o-line. The Wildcats ranked No. 10 in the FCS last season in sacks allowed per game (1.08) and were No. 33 in rushing offense (170 YPG). They finished 7-1 in the CAA and 10-3 overall with a quarterfinal loss to South Dakota State.
Gamroth earned more accolades this offseason as the 2021 CAA Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He graduated with a degree in computer engineering and is now a grad student working on a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity and a Master’s degree in Software Engineering. He’ll play in his sixth year of college football.
Nova looks to build off last season’s success and its first quarterfinal appearance since 2014. HERO Sports ranks the Wildcats No. 9 in our preseason Top 25. Quarterback play will be key as the Wildcats lose standout Daniel Smith. The offensive line is tasked with making the new starter comfortable, and Nova should be solid up front with Gamroth and Michael Corbi.
