University of New Haven Joining The NEC
The FCS is getting a new member.
The University of New Haven, located in West Haven, Connecticut, has accepted a full membership invitation to join the Northeast Conference.
New Haven will be integrated into NEC athletic schedules beginning in the 2025-26 academic year with the exception of football. The timing of New Haven football’s addition to the conference schedule is still to be determined. The Chargers will attain full Division I membership in 2028-29 following the NCAA-mandated reclassification period.
The Chargers football team has gone 8-3 in the last three years and 10-2 in 2021, reaching the D2 playoffs four straight years.
“We are thrilled to welcome the University of New Haven to the Northeast Conference family,” NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris said. “Making the move to Division I is a bold step, and we’re honored that New Haven chose to take that step with us. From the start, it was clear that they share our values – putting academics, competitive excellence, and the student-athlete experience at the forefront. I want to thank President Jens Frederiksen and Athletic Director Devin Crosby for their thoughtful leadership throughout this process. I’m also grateful to the NEC Council of Presidents for their support and shared vision as we continue to shape the future of the conference. We’re excited to partner with the Chargers as they make their mark in Division I and help elevate the NEC.”
The NEC has eight members this football season: Central Connecticut State, Duquesne, Long Island University, Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Saint Francis U, Stonehill College, and Wagner. Saint Francis, however, is moving from D1 to D3 after the 2025-26 academic year
“We are thrilled about this opportunity for the University of New Haven,” New Haven President Jens Frederiksen said. “Athletics has been and continues to be a vital driver of enrollment and brand recognition for the University. This move to the Northeast Conference and Division I positions the University for an exciting future – one consistent with the overall strategic focus on academic, professional and global return on investment.”
SDSU Gets 2x 1,000-Yard FCS RB From The Portal
South Dakota State got a splash transfer portal addition when former Fordham running back Julius Loughridge announced his commitment.
Loughridge is a 2023 and 2024 All-Patriot League First Team selection with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. The 6-foot and 215-pounder rushed for 1,146 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023, and 1,044 yards and nine TDs last fall. He totaled 896 rushing yards and eight scores in 2022.
Loughridge was ranked HERO Sports’ No. 13 returning FCS running back entering last season.
SDSU also added RB Nate White from Wisconsin earlier this year, and he looked the part of a potential 1,000-yard back during spring ball.
They’ll run behind an offensive line that features four players with starting experience, including last year’s starting tackles Quinten Christensen and Sam Hagen.
Loughridge is one of a few impact FCS transfers the Jackrabbits have landed. Offensive lineman Nate Adams was a 2024 All-Conference performer at SFA. Interior defensive lineman Mason Brosseau started 10 games at Sac State last year, totaling 20 tackles, five TFLs, and 3.5 sacks. Tight end Coleman Kuntz also arrives from Sac State, where he totaled 45 catches for 427 yards and two touchdowns in the last two seasons.
