UAlbany Lands Former FCS Freshman All-American WR Jacari Carter
Some of UAlbany’s best players last season were guys the Great Danes signed out of the transfer portal.
They hope to strike gold again via the portal after losing several All-Conference and All-American names from last year’s semifinal team.
UAlbany has landed seven FBS transfers this offseason:
Jacari Carter (WR), Georgia State
Aaron Steinfeldt (TE), Indiana
Marcus Winfield (DL), Kent State
Myles Bell (DB), Marshall
Julio Macias (K), Purdue
Chris Gales (DB), Toledo
Myles Burkett (QB), Wisconsin
And six FCS transfers:
Dontae Lunan (LB), Bryant
Jamal Cooney (WR), Dartmouth
Seven McGee (WR), Jackson State
Chiebuka Aduaka (DL), Merrimack
Sean Morris (DL), Morgan State
Jack Iuliano (DL), Penn
Plus some transfers from lower divisions.
WR Jacari Carter from Georgia State is a familiar name in the FCS world.
Carter caught 125 passes for 1,227 yards and 13 touchdowns in 25 games at Merrimack from 2021-22. In 2021, he was a Freshman All-American, First Team All-NEC, and a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award. His 89 receptions were four shy of Cooper Kupp’s FCS freshman season record.
Last fall at Georgia State, Carter was the team’s third-leading receiver with 38 catches for 273 yards.
Cal Poly’s Sam Huard Enters The Portal
Quarterback Sam Huard has entered the transfer portal after one season at Cal Poly.
Huard drew headlines last offseason when he transferred to Cal Poly from Washington. He became a very rare former 5-star recruit to play in the FCS.
In the 2021 recruiting class, he was rated the nation’s No. 1 pro-style QB, No. 23 overall prospect, and No. 3 recruit in the state of Washington by 247Sports.
He redshirted in 2021, then backed up Michael Penix Jr. in 2022. Huard then transferred to Cal Poly, reuniting with his high school coach Sheldon Cross, who was named Cal Poly’s offensive coordinator in January 2023. Cross recently took the OC job at Stetson.
Huard started nine games for Cal Poly last fall, going 184/303 for 2,247 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
The Mustangs finished 3-8 a year after going 2-9.
