Welcome to the 2020 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Throughout the May-August months, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-1. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2019 season.
The full 99-1 countdown/schedule can be found here.
*Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2019 rosters.
67: Cordell Volson, OL (Sr.) — North Dakota State
No matter if NDSU is bringing back five starters or just one starter, you know the Bison are going to own the best offensive line in the FCS. Volson is a prime example of why the Bison are able to reload up front every year. When a spot on the o-line opens up, fourth-year juniors or fifth-year seniors are ready to step in.
Volson sat and developed for three seasons before hitting the starting lineup last year at right tackle. The staff was so high on Volson and getting him on the field that 2018 All-American right tackle Zack Johnson was moved to right guard. Johnson went on to be an All-American at guard while Volson grabbed postseason honors as well.
The 6-foot-6, 312-pound North Dakota native was named a HERO Sports Second Team All-American and earned a spot on the All-MVFC First Team. Volson started all 16 games for the national champion Bison. In the 12 regular-season games, Volson had 100 knockdown blocks and allowed just one-half sack in 724 snaps.
He’s a preseason HERO Sports First Team All-American entering his senior season and should have an NFL contract a year from now.
