Throughout the May-September months, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-1. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2019 season.

12: Daniel Smith, QB (Sr.) — Villanova
Smith proved to be the missing piece for Nova’s offense when he transferred last year from Campbell, where he broke career records for total offense, rushing touchdowns, passing yards and passing touchdowns.
After winning the starting job with Nova, Smith went 236-396 passing for 3,274 yards, 35 TDs and 10 interceptions. The dual-threat QB also ran for 457 yards and 12 TDs. With one receiving touchdown as well, Smith had a hand in 48 of Nova’s 62 offensive TDs.
The 6-foot and 205-pounder led the FCS in points responsible for (288) and was No. 16 in total offense (287.0 yards per game). Smith earned All-CAA Third Team honors.
Smith is a 2020 HERO Sports preseason Second Team All-American.
