The I-AA/FCS level began in 1978, so … sorry Harvard and Princeton, all of those incredible wins against the monsters of today's Power Five conferences won't count in this chart. When the levels split in 1978, a lower scholarship amount was agreed upon with the schools that wanted to go I-AA/FCS. Some schools wanted to take the expenses down a notch and agreed to play with smaller rosters, and thus the FCS of today was born.
Also in the early years, some programs had a tough time deciding at which level they wanted to stick, so there are some results below that may surprise you … like Bucknell beating Cornell in 1980 being on this list. But in 1980, the Ivy League considered itself to be upper division (today's FBS). That changed in the early 1980s.
