Whitney Richardson, DE — Lane
Richardson had a monstrous season for the Dragons in 2016, totaling 32.5 TFL and 17.5 sacks. Entering 2017, Richardson has been recognized many times as a preseason All American, and that usually gets you early consideration for the Harlon Hill. If the senior can post numbers similar to that of his previous season, Richardson might just become the first defensive player to win the award since Ronald McKinnon.

Johnathon McCrary, QB — Clark Atlanta
While CAU does not pass the ball a majority of the time, McCrary has the ability to and could flash this season after posting 1,904 yards and 14 touchdown passes in 2016. A season high 456 yards against Morehouse proved that the ability is there, and we might see more of it this season for the Panthers. If the redshirt-senior can post decent numbers throwing the ball, then we might see at least a nomination.

Osband Thompson, LB — Tuskegee
Our second defensive candidate in the conference, Thompson is one of the best tackling machines in the country and that should get him notice among national eyes just like it did for Connor Harris of Lindenwood last season. A terrific NFL prospect, the senior linebacker totaled 137 tackles with 11.5 for loss, and he also recorded one pick and four breakups in coverage. While he's a bit small (6-foot-0, 194 pounds), Thompson plays a big game and should get noticed by the national voting board.
