As Saquon Barkley was putting the finishing touches of a 305-yard performance in Penn State's last-second win over Iowa on Sept. 23, Bryce Love took the field against UCLA and promptly began an equally huge day that ended with 265 total yards and a 58-34 Stanford victory.
A month later, both players are vying for the Heisman Trophy thanks to many stat-stuffing games.
While Love ranks first nationally in rushing yards (1,387) and yards per carry (10.3), Barkley has the same number of total touchdowns (11) and just 201 fewer total yards (1,406 to 1,205).
Barkley has caught at least two passes in each game; Love has only one game with multiple catches. Love has three multi-rushing touchdown games; Barkley has four multi-touchdown games. Barkley's team is 7-0, including a 29-point demolition of Michigan; Love's team is 5-2, including a loss at San Diego State.
Both players still have more regular-season games remaining, and while the Heisman Trophy isn't won in September in October, these two have crafted impressive campaigns that stack up against anyone in the country thus far.
