(Very Difficult) Heisman Trophy Trivia

The 84th Heisman Trophy will be awarded to either Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa or Dwayne Haskins on Saturday, Dec. 8. One of those quarterbacks will join one of the most exclusive groups in sports. How well do you know that exclusive group?

Do you know which Heisman winner played in the NBA? Or the most recent top-10 finisher for your school? Or which quarterbacks have won a national championship in their first season after replacing a Heisman winner?

Dive into some (very difficult) Heisman Trophy trivia:

Interception-Throwing Winner

The last three Heisman-winning quarterbacks — Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson and Marcus Mariota — threw a combined 19 interceptions during their Heisman campaigns. The 1990 Heisman winner, Ty Detmer, threw 28. By himself. In one year.

Detmer won the award during an era when quarterbacks won it more often than other positions but it wasn't dominated by signal-callers. It is now dominated by signal-callers. Fifteen of the last 18 winners were quarterbacks, only one of whom threw more than 10 interceptions.

Question: Who is the last quarterback to win the Heisman while throwing more than 10 interceptions?

NBA Heisman Winner

University of Chicago running back Jay Berwanger was the first winner of the Heisman Trophy, capturing what later became the most prestigious individual honor in American sports in 1935. Berwanger was selected by Philadelphia Eagles with the first pick in the 1936 NFL Draft. The Eagles, however, couldn't sign him and traded his draft rights to the Chicago Bears. And when Berwanger didn't sign with the Bears, he went into private business and never played a snap in the NFL.

Jay Berwanger was the first of seven Heisman Trophy winners who never played in the NFL. One of those winners opted for a basketball career instead.

Question: Who's the only Heisman Trophy winner to play in the NBA?

Power Five Without Top 10

There are 65 Power Five programs. Sixty-four of them have had at least one player finish in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting since the trophy was first awarded in 1935.

Question: Who's the only Power Five program who's never had a player finish in the top 10 of Heisman Trophy voting?

AAC Top-10 Finishers

McKenzie Milton's 4,000-yard, 37-touchdown effort during UCF's undefeated 2017 season earned him four first-place votes for the Heisman Trophy and 54 overall points. The Knights' sophomore quarterback finished eighth, becoming the first UCF player to finish in the top 10 since running back Kevin Smith also finished eighth in 2007.

Question: Who's the most recent top-10 Heisman finisher for each AAC team?

Most Recent Top-10 Finisher

This one is a tad challenging…

Of the 64 Power Five programs (including Notre Dame) with a top-10 finisher, Minnesota has the longest drought. Defensive lineman Bobby Bell — who led the Gophers to the 1960 national championship — finished third in 1962. Duke (1963) and Wake Forest (1964) are not far behind.

Question: Who's the most recent top-10 Heisman finisher for each of the 130 FBS programs?

Heisman Successor Wins Title

Thirty-five quarterbacks have won the Heisman Trophy. Twenty-five of them left college football after their Heisman season.

Question: Of the quarterbacks who replaced them as starter the following season, how many led their team to a national title in that first season?
