The College Football Playoff field will double to eight teams by 2022, says Kirk Herbstreit.
"Everyone has the same feeling; expansion is inevitable,” Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, a former playoff committee member (2014-16), said in December. “When you can do it, and I think we need to serve more people. I think four was the right way to get started. In my opinion, we need to take a look of adding more teams into the Playoff, giving more opportunities."
Dozens of current and former FBS head coaches have echoed a similar sentiment, as have current and former conference commissioners, university presidents, and other stakeholders in and around college football. Despite the increased support, there's no known plan for immediate expansion. Still, Kirk Herbstreit believes we'll have an eight-team playoff within three years.
