Houston will fire head coach Major Applewhite within the next 24 hours, tweeted Bruce Feldman on Saturday afternoon, hours after FootballScoop reported that Houston was considering replacing Applewhite with West Virginia's Dana Holgorsen.
"[S]ources said U of H boosters are evaluating all options, including considering bringing in West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen to replace Applewhite," FootballScoop's Zach Barnett wrote.
After taking over for Tom Herman in December 2016, Applewhite signed a five-year contract worth $1.5 million per season. With three years remaining on the contract, his buyout is currently $1.95 million.
The Cougars won 15 games over the last two seasons, their second-lowest two-year win total since 2004-05, and lost to Army , 70-14, in the Armed Forces Bowl.
