Entering the 1967 draft, zero Wyoming players were ever chosen earlier than the third round and 1961 draftee Jerry Hill, the 35th pick by the Baltimore Colts (third round) was the highest draft pick in the program history. Defensive tackle Ron Billingsley shattered Hill's record in 1967, becoming the first-ever Cowboy drafted in the first round when Los Angeles Chargers made him the 14th pick.
Nine years later, Wyoming had two first-round selections in the same year for the first time ever. Running back Lawrence Gaines was selected by the Detroit Lions with the 16th pick in the 1976 draft, and defensive back Aaron Kyle was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys nine picks later.
Not only does Billingsley's record still stand, zero Wyoming players have come close to breaking it. No players have been chosen with a top-40 pick since 1979. But with Allen widely projected as a top-five pick — top 10 at worst — the Cowboys' first-round trio will become a quartet and, barring a stunning fall, Allen will be the highest-draft player in program history.
