California linebacker Devante Downs got the nod as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1 of the 2017 college football season.
Downs has always been a talented player, but the senior really stepped up his play and production in the Golden Bears 35-30 win over North Carolina. Downs contributed a game-high 13 tackles, 0.5 TFLs, and he had a forced fumble. In addition, Downs ended the first half with an interception.
