More transferring student-athletes will receive immediate eligibility without a waiver request.
On Friday, the NCAA announced new rules that apply to some transferring student-athletes, including those at programs whose coach departed before the fall semester begins.
The two changes made by the Division I council:
"College athletes who have enrolled in summer school and received athletics financial aid can transfer and play immediately without a waiver if their head coach departs before the first day of classes for the fall term."
Example: In 2017, if an Oklahoma football student-athlete (with remaining eligibility) was enrolled in summer courses when Bob Stoops announced his resignation on June 7, 2017, that student-athlete would be allowed to transfer to another school and play immediately during the 2017 season.
"Additionally, walk-on student-athletes on teams that provide athletics aid and nonrecruited walk-ons can transfer and play immediately without a waiver. Those rules are effective for students who transfer to new schools this fall."
That one is very simple. Walk-ons can transfer and play immediately at another school.
“It’s definitely a win in our books,” said Enna Selmanovic, vice chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council a former swimmer at Cincinnati who will graduate in May. “[This] provides student-athletes with more opportunities to have the best experience possible within their collegiate career.”
