NFL Scoring Broken Down by College Football Team and Conference

Last season, SEC alums in the NFL outscored their ACC counterparts 1,878 to 1,856. Close game. The two college football power conferences outdid every other conference by a wide margin.

This is one of many fun stats we uncovered while researching NFL scoring in 2016. Here are a few of the most interesting graphs we came up with. Isn't the NFL fun?

NFL Points Scored by College Conference and Type (2016)
NFL Scoring by Conference and Type 2016Here's the top ten:

1. SEC – 1,878 points
2. ACC – 1,856 points
3. Big Ten – 1,437 points
4. Big 12 – 1,239 points
5. Pac-12 – 1,207 points
6. AAC – 1,019 points
7. Mountain West – 392 points
8. Conference USA – 341 points
9. FBS Independent – 248 points
10. Sun Belt – 245 points

Good for the AAC punching up with the power conferences. A lot of that has to do with the kickers the conference has produced. Cairo Santos, Stephen Gostkowski, Matt Prater, and Brandon McManus are all AAC products, and all ranked in the top 20 scorers in the NFL last year.

After the AAC though, scoring falls off dramatically. In fact, Florida State alumni scored more points last season than Mountain West alumni, which you will see in the following chart.[divider]

NFL Scoring by College and Type

Wow Florida State. Wow.

A majority of the Seminoles' NFL-best points were scored by four players last year. All kickers. Dustin Hopkins, Sebastian Janikowski, Graham Gano, and Roberto Aguayo combined for 481 points by themselves — more than all but six conferences.

If you remove points scored by kickers, Ohio State alumni led the way with 316 points, followed by LSU with 256, Oklahoma with 252, Miami with 244, and finally Florida State with 218. [divider]

Points Scored in Each NFL Division by College Conference

So this was hard to title. Along the top row of this table you'll find NFL divisions, and down the left side you'll find college football conferences. Each cell represents the percentage of the division at the top's total points the conference is responsible for. So ACC alumni are responsible for 5.72% of all points scored in the AFC North last season. Former SEC players scored 23.34% of all points in the NFC East last year.

The darker the green, the higher the percentage within the division.
