Twenty years after Mack Brown voluntarily left North Carolina for Texas, North Carolina is voluntarily bringing him back.
North Carolina fired Larry Fedora on Sunday, one day after the Tar Heels finished the season with a loss to North Carolina State. Fedora won 11 games and the ACC Coastal Division in 2015 and had two more eight-win seasons during his first five years as head coach, but he went 5-18 the last two years, including 2-14 in the ACC.
With Fedora out, most attention focused on names like Scott Satterfield, Mike Houston and Seth Littrell. Instead, North Carolina hired Mack Brown. Did athletics director Bubba Cunningham hire Brown because he thinks Brown is still a good coach? Or did he hire Brown because it was an easy, feel-good, comfortable hire?
Regardless, North Carolina can do better. Listen (starts at 10:20)
