Notre Dame Can’t Beat Good ACC Teams

Notre Dame's decision to join the ACC in 2014 as a partial football member may have been a smart financial decision but the Irish are struggling to win against the conference's good teams.

Since Notre Dame began their partial conference membership three years ago that required they play five games vs. ACC teams, the Irish have played 20 total such games. As noted by ESPN, they are just 13-7 in those games, including 4-6 vs. teams with a winning record.

They won their first two games against teams that should finish the season with a winning record (vs. North Carolina State, vs. Wake Forest) but were blown out by Miami (FL) in Week 11.

Year Opponent Result
2017 at Miami (FL) Lost
2017 vs. Wake Forest Won
2017 vs. North Carolina State Won
2016 vs. Virginia Tech Loss
2016 vs. Miami (FL) Won
2016 at North Carolina State Loss
2015 at Pittsburgh Won
2015 at Clemson Loss
2014 vs. Louisville Loss
2014 at Florida State Loss

Notre Dame does not face another ACC opponent the rest of the season, therefore they'll conclude their fourth year of membership with a .400 winning percentage against good ACC teams. They've lost at least one game vs. a winning-record ACC team in each of their four seasons.

They are scheduled to play Wake Forest and Virginia Tech on the road in 2018 and Pittsburgh, Florida State and Syracuse at home.
