It is the first major scheduling change for a 2020 college football season expected to be heavily impacted by coronavirus restrictions and/or cancellations. The game, announced in October 2018, was the first college football game scheduled to be played in Ireland since Penn State defeated UCF in 2014. It was also the only scheduled international game for the 2020 season and previously announced as the site for ESPN College GameDay.
Notre Dame and Navy have met in 83 consecutive seasons, though as McMurphy noted, it will be their first meeting in Annapolis. They've played in Maryland several times, including their first-ever meeting in Baltimore in 1927, but have never played in Annapolis.
