Even with 130 FBS head coaching jobs, Lane Kiffin knows the opportunities are limited and it's not typical to get three chances at leading a program.
Kiffin is entering his first season as Florida Atlantic head coach. It's the 42-year-old's first head coaching job since the infamous tarmac firing at USC four years ago but already his third attempt overall (Tennessee, 2009).
"If I don't make it here," Kiffin, who arrived in Boca Raton from his offensive coordinator post at Alabama, told Bleacher Report in late August. "I guess I'm just a play-caller."
Not many failed head coaches get a second chance, let alone a third. With more than 1,000 full-time assistants in the FBS (and thousands more in lower divisions), many of whom have head coaching aspirations, the volume suddenly seems microscopic — yet some of the 130 FBS head coaches are unknown to even the most passionate college football fans.
