Michigan, ranked No. 5 in both the AP and Coaches' polls, were so heavily favored against Appalachian State on Sept. 1, 2007, that they actually weren't technically favored. The predicted margin of victory was projected to be so high that a betting line was not even available.
The unknown Appalachian State Mountaineers of the Southern Conference in the FCS erased an early first-quarter deficit and led the Wolverines, a team with national championship aspirations who won 11 games in 2006, by 11 points at halftime. Michigan roared back to take a 32-21 lead on a Mike Hart 54-yard touchdown run with four minutes, 36 seconds remaining in the game. After App State hit a field goal with 26 seconds on the clock, the Wolverines lined up for 37-yard field goal attempt with four seconds remaining.
