5-Star Recruits Generate $650,000 in Annual Revenue, Study Says

Mike Adams was a five-star offensive lineman in the 2008 recruiting class. The Dublin, Ohio, native signed with Ohio State and played four seasons in Columbus before selection in the 2012 NFL Draft. Over those four years, Adams and other five-star signees generated an average of $650,000 in revenue for Ohio State.

“There have been a lot of numbers put out there about how much college athletes should get under various compensation proposals. But it’s hard to do that when you don’t know how players affect the bottom line. That’s what we’re trying to do here.” said Trevon Logan, Ohio State professor of economics and co-author of a study estimating the revenue for college football players.

The study, accepted for publication in the Journal of Sports Economics, used recruiting data from Rivals and football-specific revenue and expenses from the Office of Postsecondary Education from 2002-12 for all FBS schools. Over this time, four-star recruits generated $350,000 per year and three-star recruits generated $150,000. Meanwhile, two-star recruits reduced revenue by $13,000 per year.
