There’s a legacy in Southeastern Kansas that is hard to describe. It’s not just the best record among D2 football schools in Kansas, the two national championships, the 11 MIAA titles since joining the league in 1989, or the 10,200 fans per home game at Carnie Smith Stadium (third best average in D2 football).
We’ll let Pitt State tight end Kyle Schwartz explain it: “You drive down Broadway and there isn’t a single shop without a split face (logo), a Gorilla flag or a Gorilla statue in front of their business, because everybody is so proud of our team … and we are too. When you come into Carnie Smith Stadium and do the Gorilla Walk, there’s nothing like it in the entire nation.”
