How many educated fans know that Alabama entered 2015 with only one Heisman Trophy winner? It is a shockingly low number for one of the nation's premier programs. Mark Ingram became the first recipient of college football's highest individual honor in 2009, but received just 46.99 percent of first-place votes, the lowest total since… (giving trivia nerds a moment to gather themselves and take a stab at this) …Eric Crouch earned 27.75 percent in 2001. The Nebraska quarterback barely edged Florida gunslinger Rex Grossman (770 points vs. 708).
Derrick Henry became their second honoree, holding off Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson in 2015's vote.
Alabama's dominance over the last decade more than makes up for only two Heisman honors, with the Crimson Tide winning three national titles since 2009, Nick Saban's third year in Tuscaloosa. Saban, however, has never won AFCA Coach of the Year. Bear Bryant was honored three times while Gene Stallings was the last Bama coach to grab the honor, doing so during their 1992 title-winning season.
The Tide also won the SEC title this year for the second consecutive season. It was the first time a team won the SEC in back to back season since… (trivia nerds, take your minute)… Tennessee in 1997-98.
