Everyone knows the best interceptions, other than pick-sixes or game-clinchers, are interceptions that belong in a circus. The D3 football game between Utica and Cortland had a circus special that saw Dehstin Smart of Utica pull in the most bizarre pick of his career.
The play starts in simple enough fashion with the Cortland quarterback running a read option play before pulling the ball out and tossing it down the right sideline. The ball is tipped in the air by a receiver, who then has the ball land on his back and bounce into the air while he is on the turf. The play is then extended as a diving Utica defender misjudges the ball and essentially connects with a soccer-style diving header, propelling the ball directly into the arms of the grateful Smart. It is a crazy one alright.
Actually, it was so crazy we nominated it for the D3 football highlight of the week.
