Virginia Tech beat Pitt on Thursday night in a crazy ACC battle that could have gone either way. There were a number of crazy, special, and bizarre plays in the game (including Pitt's offensive lineman touchdown), but probably the craziest and most impressive was this Isaiah Ford catch for the Hokies on the first play of the second quarter.
The play starts out like any other, once again proving that some of the most bizarre college football highlights happen when least expected. On second-and-13, the ball is tossed roughly 25 yards down the field to the right sideline in the direction of Ford. The receiver goes up with his defensive back to try to make the catch and both players come crashing down to the turf with the ball landing incomplete somewhere in the mass of humanity.
Except that isn't quite what happened. Ford initially seems like he has made the catch but, as the players fall, the defensive back rips the ball out of his grip and toward his own body. The ball then bounces around on the defender with both players fighting for it while on the ground. Eventually, the announcer calls the ball incomplete, before quickly realizing that somewhere in the mess Ford was actually able to pull the ball away, preventing an interception and gaining valuable yardage for his team. The second replay shows the best angle on this play.
Not only is the play awesome, but it is also pretty funny, especially when it is slowed down. The two players are just throwing their hands at the ball and as both are prone on the ground and it all looks a little ridiculous. It is doubtful Ford and the Hokies will care that much though as this play was important in their 39-36 victory.
