Baker Mayfield’s meteoric rise from little-known Texas Tech transfer to Heisman contender is quite remarkable, but that shouldn’t stun the masses considering the recent wave of Heisman-winning quarterbacks (Cam Newton, Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston) that have transformed from mild afterthoughts to college football’s most celebrated player.
Since winning the BR-2 Oklahoma starting quarterback job over Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas during fall camp, the Austin (Tex.) native has proceeded to dominant opposing defenses in leading the Sooners to a 9-1 mark and within striking distance of the College Football Playoff field.
In throwing for 3,082 yards, 31 touchdowns and five interceptions and running for 301 yards and six more touchdowns, he has thrown his hat into a wide-open Heisman Trophy race, one that has been dominated by running backs until now.
As spectacular as Mayfield has been, like Oklahoma’s playoff hopes, his candidacy will hinge on their final two games, Nov. 21 vs. BR-10 TCU and Nov. 28 at BR-8 Oklahoma State.
As balloters continue to weigh their options, one OU fan created this awesome hype/highlight video to showcase his 2015 exploits:
