"Rutgers University To Join The Big Ten Conference." Wait, what? Rutgers? In the Big Ten? Is this a joke? Seven years later, we're still awaiting Jim Delany's "Gotcha!"
Seven years the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors announced their unanimous approval for Rutgers' invitation into the Big Ten, that invitation remains one of the most confounding and indefensibly stupid moves in college sports history.
"The additions of Rutgers and the University of Maryland further expand the Big Ten's footprint while helping solidify our presence on the East Coast. Both institutions feature a combination of academic and athletic excellence and will prove a great fit for our future," commissioner Jim Delany spewed in November 2012, managing to not laugh over his own delusion that Rutgers is a "great fit" for the Big Ten.
Does the Big Ten regret adding Rutgers? "Oh yeah," said Kirk Herbstreit on the High Motor podcast this week. During the Hurry Up segment, Herbstreit answers that question and wonders who'd the Big Ten would invite if Rutgers was kicked out.
