Bronco Mendenhall
Current Position: Head Coach – BYU
Bronco Mendenhall just reeks of “The guy who is happy winning 8-10 games every year at a middle tier program” but is that accurate? From all accounts, the former Oregon State defensive back and Utah native loves leading the Cougars and didn’t jump at an opportunity to lead his alma mater last offseason. No, there’s no evidence that Oregon State even contacted Mendenhall, but I’ll bet the farm that if he was interested, it would have prompted an interview.
That being said, because he didn’t bolt for Oregon State doesn’t mean he won’t leave Provo. Although top 10 jobs like USC and Georgia are more likely to open in this age of constant coaching turnover, the stars rarely align to warrant such a move from a stable program like BYU. It’s worth noting that Mendenhall’s easternmost job was at Louisiana Tech as defensive backs coach in 1997 and has spent the other 26 years of his career west of the Rockies.
