The Alabama State men’s basketball team is heading to the 2025 NCAA Tournament after winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference. In the SWAC tourney, it defeated Texas Southern 84-79, Grambling State 64-62, and Jackson State 60-56 in the championship game to clinch the auto-bid.
The Hornets are 19-15 overall this season and on a 6-game winning streak.

In 2025, Alabama State basketball will make its 5th appearance in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament.
The Hornets also reached the tourney in 2001, 2004, 2009, and 2011.

Alabama State has won one game in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament, beating Saint Francis 70-68 in the 2025 First Four.
The Hornets have lost to Michigan State in 2001, Duke in 2004, Morehead State in 2009, UTSA in 2011, and Auburn in 2025.
Their overall record in the Big Dance is 1-5.
Alabama State Basketball Coach Tony Madlock Salary
Tony Madlock has an annual base salary of about $150,000 as Alabama State’s head basketball coach.
Madlock is in his third season at ASU. The Hornets finished 8-23 in 2022-23, 13-19 last year, and are currently 19-15 this season. He was previously the head coach at South Carolina State in 2021-22 and was the interim head coach at Ole Miss at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Madlock has had college assistant coaching stops dating back to 1997 at Arkansas State, UTEP, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Memphis.
