The Memphis men’s basketball team is heading to the 2025 NCAA Tournament after winning the American Athletic Conference. In the AAC tourney, it defeated Wichita State 83-80, Tulane 78-77, and UAB 84-72 in the championship game to clinch the auto-bid.
The Tigers are 29-5 this season and on an 8-game winning streak.
Memphis NCAA Tournament Appearances
In 2025, Memphis basketball will make its 29th appearance in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers also reached the tourney in 1955, 1956, 1962, 1973, 1976, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2022, and 2023.

Memphis Basketball NCAA Tournament Wins
Memphis has won 35 games in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament, although its wins from 1982 to 1986 and in 2008 have been vacated. Its overall record in the tourney is 35-27.
The Tigers’ most recent victories in the Big Dance are in 2022 (64-53 over Boise State), 2014 (71-66 over George Washington), and 2013 (54-52 over Saint Mary’s).
Memphis Basketball Coach Penny Hardaway Salary
Penny Hardaway has an annual base salary of $2.7 million as Memphis’ head basketball coach. That figure jumps up to $2.8 million for the 2025-26 season, $2.9 million for the 2026-27 season, and $3 million for the 2027-28 season.
Hardaway has been the head coach since the 2018-19 season. Memphis has hit at least 20 wins in each of those seasons, featuring three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Hardaway played college basketball at Memphis and 14 seasons in the NBA. His alma mater is his first and only college head coaching gig.
